Australian Legends

So yesterday was Australia Day, which has had me thinking about Australian Legends.

Or, to put it in gamer terms, If Australia was a playable race in Civilization, who would our Leader Be?

All Great nations (and Australia IS a great nation) have people around which a great mythos has been built.
I'm sure Sid Meier had a difficult time narrowing the field before settling on great figures such as Queen Elizabeth (England), Abe Lincoln (USA), Alexander (Greece), Cleopatra (Egypt), and so on.
And Though I'm sure none of these leaders were as noble as the mythos built up around them, the point is that a Mythos DID build up around them.

So who would Australia have?
The most well known Australian is probably Ned Kelly. A Bushranger. A strong mythos has been built around him with huge overtones of robin hood to his story (the little man who fought against an oppressive regime)
In fact he is the only Australian to have had this form of mythos/legend build up around him outside the sporting field, with Donald Bradman being far more typical of the legends that do develop in this wide brown land.

But Why?
Sure, we're a country with convict origins, most of us have a natural distrust of The Authority and Tall Poppies. Amongst the few defining traits we cling to are the "Aussie Battler", "Mateship" & "Larrikin spirit". Which is probably why we rarely elevate people to the status of myth.

I mean, there have certainly been many worthy Australians, a quick look at winners of the "Australian of the year" medal will show this (though it is a list with some odd choices on it), but none have had the same level of mythos build around them as the previously mentioned bushranger or on in a way that happens to historical figures of other lands?
And yet we love a good yarn.
(And what is a good yarn without a great central figure?)

Well in the Spirit of Australia (Invasion) Day I'm going have a good Beer while I ponder it.
